BIKE TOUR JENA – YEMEN

ONE YEAR ON THE BIKE TO A DIFFERENT WORLD

Two students are sitting in class and dream of far countries. One year later, they leave from their porch in Jena/Germany towards the south, trying to get to Yemen entirely by bike.

Romania, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and Syria, are only some of the 14 countries they passed through on their way from Jena to Yemen, and back. They sit in the saddle for 14,000 km, and collect lichen along the way for a research project.

Yemen is the poorest country of the Arabian Peninsula, but its incredible mud brick architecture, the traditional life of the people, and the fertile highlands make the Yemen into the ‘pearl of the Orient’. The two bikers gain a deeper understanding through Yemenite friends and further visits to this strictly Islamic country.

The slide show presents interesting aspects of the traveled countries, accompanied by original sounds and music. Barbara Vetter’s and Vincent Heiland’s captivating presentation will carry you off to the Arabic culture, will explain the background of the kidnappings in Yemen, and will tell you the story of the small tomcat who takes a seat on the bike rack for the last several months of the trip.

The much sought-after trophies ‘El Mundo’

Two trophies were awarded to Jena-Yemen during the international adventure & travel slide festival ‘El Mundo’ in Judenburg/Austria.
