A TRIP FROM THE BLACK FOREST TO THE BLACK SEA

What is the appeal of the Danube? Pleasure boats, perfect bike trails, numerous monasteries, Vienna, Budapest – civilization from the source to the mouth? Stereotypes which certainly have some justification. The Danube, however, offers many contrasts along its way. Full prosperity versus absolute poverty, industrial zones right next to fantastic natural reserves. It is these contrasts, as well as the ‘wild’ countries of the former Eastern Bloc, and above all the people along the river, that form the main motivation for our journey.

In order to experience the 2888 km from the source to the mouth, we chose the combination of bike and boat, which we had already tested along the rivers Euphrates & Tigris. Either, we transported the bikes, the trailer, and all the luggage in the boat, or we loaded the foldable boat on the trailer and pulled it. This way, we were able to be always close to the river, and we got to know life and people right along the river, as well as in the back country.
